The Hartz Mountain Corporation created the "Veterinarian of the Year" Contest in 2001 in conjunction with Woman's Day Magazine. Pet owners were asked to nominate vets who have excelled in the medical field as well as in their passion for nurturing animals. The scores of heart-felt essays from pet owners across America illustrate the continuous dedication of this group of professionals.

Following are excerpts from Grand Prize Winning essays:

Dr. Heidi McMorrow, DVM - West Barnstable, MA
Nominated by Judith Reppucci - Cotuit, MA

"Every Fall here on Cape Cod, summer visitors casually leave behind animals they adopted for the summer. This inhumane practice has led to a large feral population born to abandoned pets that were never spayed or neutered. My veterinarian, Heidi McMorrow, devotes herself to helping stop this heartbreaking cycle. Every Friday, she donates her "day off" to operate at the Massachusetts SPCA shelter. On a recent Friday, nine cats and four dogs were spayed and neutered-increasing their chances for adoption. It also saves the shelter time and money that can then be devoted toward other needs. McMorrow declines to be paid so her fees can be used for medical equipment. Other vets help at the shelter as well, but Dr. McMorrow is there every Friday from 9:00am until much after 3:00pm. And in between? She's back at Cape Cod Animal Hospital taking care of beloved pets like my cats who were born to a feral mother left behind by vacationers. We're lucky to have Heidi McMorrow as our veterinarian."

Dr. Richard Holm, DVM - Fresno , CA
Nominated by Jan Torrez - Fresno CA

"One would have to look far and wide to find a better veterinarian than Richard Holm. He has cared for my family's pets, as well as our numerous rescue dogs, for well over a decade. His level of commitment to his clients is unwavering. He is knowledgeable, kind, compassionate and ever willing to listen to the needs of both the client and the pet. Dr. Holm is willing to think outside the box when it comes to treatment protocol and he is always willing to go the extra mile when it comes to researching your pets particular diagnosis. His office also has committed itself to the City of Fresno 's Spay/Neuter program, offering low cost spay/neuter surgery to the community. Dr. Richard Holm, is truly a veterinarian worthy of the title 'Hartz Veterinarian of the Year.'"
