The Cat Writers Association (CWA), an organization dedicated to professionals writing about cats, teamed up with Hartz to present two awards for the best single written work published in a newspaper, magazine, newsletter, book or online. This purrfect pair of authors were revered by the feline-friendly contest judges that include the Founder & Chair of Chicago's largest no kill spay/neuter clinic, PAWS, Paula Fasseas.

Hartz is very proud to sponsor for the first time, the awards at the Cat Writers Association’s annual convention in Houston, TX. The awards recognized great cat writers, who are dedicated to educating the public, in order to enhance the treasured relationship between pets and their caring owners. The award recipients each received a cash prize as well as a custom designed award by renowned Texan artist Peggy Dee.

Joan Lowell Smith was awarded the Hartz Nursemaid Award for her article "Cat Program has a Purpuss," written about rescue kittens. In her article, she educates readers on the many benefits of the trap, neuter and return solution to stray cats. Nursemaid judge, Paula Fasseas said, "Joan Smith deserves to win this award. Her research and accuracy are flawless and she meets all criteria to the highest degree."

Contest judge, Dr. Crane, summed up Shojai’s work as, "well organized and practical advice for dealing with a wide range of issues regarding aging cats and the guardians who love them."

Hartz prides itself on helping organizations that effectively enhance pet welfare and plans to make this year’s contest the beginning of a long-term partnership and commitment to the Cat Writers Association. The development of this relationship will help make these and future materials available to a wider number of people and their pets.
