Article on Coping with Terminal Illness in Dogs Wins The Hartz Mountain Corporation Annual Award
SECAUCUS, NJ (February 12, 2006) - Eve Adamson, a veteran freelance writer, has won the 2006 Hartz Mountain Senior Dog Award for her article published last year in Your Dog magazine: "Comforting the Terminally Ill."
"We have great difficulty managing end-stage terminal illness in people, and it is no different with pets," said Dr. Jill Richardson, DVM, of The Hartz Mountain Corporation. "Everyone wants to make the right choice for their pet, but it is a demanding, confusing time. We thank Eve Adamson for her valuable contribution to this sensitive subject."
Ms. Adamson’s article explored the considerations that pet owners face and suggested options and strategies to navigate the emotions and realities of terminal illness in a pet.
In her article, Ms. Adamson explores the three care options available to a pet afflicted with serious disease: intensify the medical treatments, offer hospice care, or euthanasia. Ms. Adamson notes that while your vet is an important resource for guidance, the final decisions regarding treatment belongs to the pet owner.
The awards are presented at the annual Dog Writer’s Association Awards Banquet which is held annually in conjunction with the Westminster Dog Show.
Ms. Adamson also is the recipient of a second Hartz® award this year for a story she authored that appeared in Popular Dogs magazine: "Grooming Goes Beyond Just Beauty." The article focused on the important health benefits of regular grooming.
Ms. Adamson, who lives in Iowa City, Iowa, is a member of both the Dog and the Cat Writer’s Associations. She will receive a crystal sculpture and a prize of $1000 from Hartz® for the two awards, as well as a travel stipend. The awards will be presented by Dr. Richardson at the Awards Banquet, Sunday, February 12th at the Affinia Hotel in New York City.
