Animal Victims of Hurricane Katrina Focus of Relief Efforts
Secaucus, NJ (September 8, 2005) - The devastation of Hurricane Katrina extends to the pets trapped along with their families in the storm’s path. Thousands of dogs, cats and other domestic animals have been injured and displaced by the hurricane. The Hartz Mountain Corporation is working with several aid organizations to help provide relief to these animal victims.
Hartz and its employees are working to get supplies of needed health-care and other products, food and financial aid to area veterinarians and shelters, including the Louisiana State University (LSU) veterinary college and the Houston SPCA. The company also is supporting efforts by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and the American Kennel Club (AKC) to provide relief.
In addition, Hartz and its employees are providing assistance to the American Red Cross through a contribution matching program. Hartz is providing a dollar for dollar match for every employee donation to the Red Cross.
The AVMF funds Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMATs) that work as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) to care for injured animals, as well as provide advice concerning public health issues. Dozens of VMAT members are working in New Orleans and Mississippi with the local veterinary community to aid animal victims. Individuals wishing to support VMAT teams can make online donations on AVMF’s secure web site at www.avmf.org.
The AKC is working to establish shelters and temporary staging areas in the hurricane stricken region to provide food, shelter and veterinary treatment for displaced and injured dogs. Donations to this effort can be made at www.akc.org.
