African Cichlids are colorful fish originating from three main lakes in Africa: Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria . They are hardy, active fish but they also have some special needs. They require a large aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a pH of at least 7.8 or higher. The tank should also have African Rift Lake salt added to create a brackish environment that is more suitable for the species.

These fish prefer a fresh water environment with plenty of room. They do best in an aquarium with a pH of neutral (7.0) to slightly acidic (6.8). They also prefer soft water.
