Ticks actually secrete a sophisticated, organic \u201cglue\u201d to cement their mouth parts to their host, so removing them can be tricky.<\/p>\n<p>Daily checks and prompt removal of ticks from your dog is especially important to minimize exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/tick-transmitted-diseases\/\">tick-borne diseases<\/a> that can be passed on while the tick is attached.<\/p>\n<p>Learn the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts of removing these pesky parasites, as well as how to protect your cat or dog and their environment to prevent future infestation. Below are five steps that can help you safely remove ticks from your dog.<\/p>\n<h2>Tick Detection &amp; Removal<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Check for Ticks<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Make it a habit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/the-6-most-common-places-to-find-ticks-on-your-pet\/\">check your pet daily for ticks<\/a>, especially if she spends time outdoors in wooded or grassy areas.<\/li>\n<li>When you or your pet return from being outdoors, carefully check clothing, exposed body parts and hair for these notorious hitchhikers, especially during summer months.<\/li>\n<li>Ticks are especially fond of a dog\u2019s head and neck, ears, face, and belly, so check these areas thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li>Ticks can be found in any outdoor location with vegetation, even in manicured Suburbia.<\/li>\n<li>Contrary to popular myth, ticks don\u2019t hibernate and can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/climate-changes-and-flea-tick-infestation\/\">remain active year-round<\/a> - even in colder climates - if temperatures rise above freezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 2: Detect a Tick<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Run your hands over your dog or cat feeling for lumps or small bumps under her hair.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that a tick can be as tiny as a pinhead or as large as a lima bean if it is engorged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 3: Remove the Tick<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_34479\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34479\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34479\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/how-to-safely-remove-ticks-2.jpg\" alt=\"How to safely remove ticks - hands remove tick from cat\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Your goal is to remove the tick quickly, so it is best to avoid folklore remedies.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you discover a tick on your cat or dog, don\u2019t panic.<\/li>\n<li>While there are several tick-removal tools you can buy, a pair of fine-tipped tweezers will also work very well.<\/li>\n<li>Use the tweezers to grasp at the point of attachment, near the tick\u2019s head and as close to your pet\u2019s skin as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Do not grab the tick by its body; you don\u2019t want to accidentally squeeze, crush or puncture the tick because its fluids may contain harmful bacteria that can enter your pet's bloodstream.<\/li>\n<li>Apply gentle, but steady pressure to pull the tick straight out\u00a0from the skin. Don\u2019t twist or jerk the tick, as this can cause the body to break off and the mouthparts to remain in the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 4: Dispose of the Tick<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Relocate the tick to a tightly sealed jar or plastic baggie in case identification becomes necessary by your vet.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor your pet and the bite for 2-3 weeks following removal. If you notice any changes in your cat or dog\u2019s appetite, energy level or mobility, contact your vet.<\/li>\n<li>If your pet shows no signs of illness after 2-3 weeks, dispose of the tick by flushing it down the toilet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 5: Cleanse<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cleanse the affected area with mild soap and water, then a disinfectant to prevent infection.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure you wash your hands, too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What NOT To Do<\/h2>\n<p>Ticks attach to people and pets with great tenacity. They insert their mouthparts deep into the skin and secrete a substance that cements them to their host. When a tick is fully engorged with blood, they discharge enzymes which dissolve the glue-like solution, allowing them to detach and fall off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34479\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34479\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34479\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/how-to-safely-remove-ticks-1.jpg\" alt=\"How to safely remove ticks - Closeup of hands holding tick in silver tweezers. It is imperative that you avoid these methods. The goal is to remove the tick quickly without provoking it or waiting for it to detach.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid squeezing the body of the tick during removal. Administering pressure to a tick may cause it to release fluid (which could include disease-causing bacteria, infection, and other microorganisms) into your pet\u2019s bloodstream.<\/li>\n<li>Do not attempt to use nail polish, petroleum jelly, alcohol or heat. These \u2018techniques\u2019 are not effective and let the tick remain attached for longer than desired.\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t smother the tick. Ticks can live several hours without air. Attempting to smother a tick with Vaseline, nail polish etc. will only extend the window of opportunity for the tick to transmit dangerous bacteria to its host.<\/li>\n<li>Never burn the tick with a hot match or cigarette. Once embedded, it can take time for a tick to detach itself from its host, even if it\u2019s strongly motivated. Burning the tick may kill it, but won\u2019t make it fall off any faster and you\u2019ll pose unnecessary risk to your cat or dog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress or traumatize the tick. Any of the above methods can cause the tick to regurgitate its stomach \u201cguts\u201d (which may be filled with dangerous bacteria) back into its host, increasing the risk of infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How quickly must a tick be removed?<\/h2>\n<p>Remove the tick as soon as you find it because you can never be sure how long it has been attached. Generally, it takes at least 24 hours for an infected tick to transmit a bacterial infection to its host.<\/p>\n<h2>What if some of the tick is left behind?<\/h2>\n<p>The short answer is, probably nothing. Even if you carefully remove the body and head, it is not unusual for the mouth (called the hypostome) to remain attached. Eventually the body will naturally \u201ceject\u201d the remains. Just be sure to wash the area with soap and water to prevent infection.<\/p>\n<h2>Using Tick Preventatives<\/h2>\n<p>Cats and dogs are very susceptible to tick bites. Vaccines are not available for most tick-borne diseases and do not stop ticks from making their way into your home or onto your pet. For these reasons, it\u2019s important to use preventative products to reduce the chances that a tick will bite and make your companion sick.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you see ticks walking around on a pet or in the home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/cats-ca\/flea-tick-control-cats-ca\/sprays-ca\/\">flea and tick sprays<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/flea-tick-control-ca\/powders-ca\/\">powders<\/a> can be used.<\/li>\n<li>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/pets-parasites-flea-tick-prevention\/\">prevent ticks from biting your cat or dog<\/a>, use topical drops or collars such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/our-brands\/ultraguard-ca\/\">Hartz\u00ae UltraGuard Plus\u00ae and Hartz\u00ae UltraGuard PRO\u00ae lines<\/a>, because they contain active ingredients that target killing all three stages of the tick life. However, you should always do routine inspections on your animal even with product application.<\/li>\n<li>Ticks that are killed should be placed in a small sealable and insecticide treated container before discarding.<\/li>\n<li>You may find ticks that are embedded even though they are dead.
