We have a few great tips to minimize your dog\u2019s anxiety and fear during fireworks celebrations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create a Safe Haven for Your Dog. <\/strong>Keep your dog inside and make a safe place for him. Remove all objects from the room that could cause harm \u2013 some dogs are destructive when frightened. Make sure his go-to hiding spot like under the bed or his kennel is clear and accessible \u2013 don\u2019t pull him out if he is hiding. If the fireworks are especially close to your house, take him to a friend\u2019s house where the noise won\u2019t be as loud. Also close all the curtains and blinds to keep out the bright light flashes and decrease the loud booms and make sure all the doors and windows are securely closed and locked. You may also want to put down some <a style=\"font-size: revert; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/dog-pads-ca\/\">dog training pads<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> in case your dog gets excited and has an accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Calm Your Dog with Aromatherapy. <\/strong>There are many calming sprays out there to ease your dog\u2019s stress. If his reaction is severe, talk to your vet for a prescription. Otherwise, try an over-the-counter remedy or an at-home aromatherapy oil spray like lavender. Spray his coat and on a bandana or something that you can tie loosely around his neck. Our Certified Trainer, Jason Jimenez, recommends Bach Rescue\u00ae Remedy for Pets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exercise Your Dog. <\/strong>Wear your dog out. Three or four hours before the celebration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/running-with-your-dog\/\">take your dog for a long walk, run<\/a>, or to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/dog-park-etiquette\/\">dog park<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/toys-ca\/toss-retrieve-ca\/\">Playing catch<\/a> is also a great way to exhaust your dog \u2013 try it for a half hour or until your dog tires. By releasing energy now, he\u2019ll have less to exert during the fireworks and hopefully be less stressed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feed Him a Big Meal. <\/strong>Feed your dog a big meal an hour or two before the celebration. He\u2019ll feel relaxed and content like you do after a big meal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Massage his Nerves Away. <\/strong>You know how relaxing massages are for you, so try it on your dog. Have him lie down and gently massage his legs, shoulders, back, neck, and tips of his ears. You can even hold him during the fireworks and pet him to reduce anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_34479\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34479\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34479\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/what-can-i-give-my-dog-to-calm-him-down-from-fireworks-2.jpg\" alt=\"What can i give my dog to calm him down from fireworks? - Woman kisses Australian Shepherd dog lovingly\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keep your dog\u2019s focus away from the fireworks by cuddling or playing to distract him.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Cuddle his Fears Away.<\/strong> During (if you are staying inside) and after the fireworks, it\u2019s important to spend quality time with your dog. This will calm him down and ensure him that everything is ok and the fireworks are over.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide Some Distractions.<\/strong> Try keeping your dog\u2019s focus away from the fireworks by cuddling or playing. You can also give him a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/toys-ca\/\">toy to divert his attention<\/a>. Try turning on the radio or the television to block out some of the fireworks noises and cheering.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make Sure Your Dog Has Proper ID.<\/strong> If you do take your dog to the fireworks (which isn\u2019t recommended) make sure he is micro-chipped and wearing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/understanding-the-importance-of-pet-identification-tags\/\">ID collar<\/a>. Your dog may get scared and bolt.
