Here\u2019s a list of items you\u2019ll want to consider bringing with you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your dog\u2019s collar and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/understanding-the-importance-of-pet-identification-tags\/\">license tag<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A leash\/harness (or small cage if appropriate);<\/li>\n<li>A muzzle if your dog barks or bites;<\/li>\n<li>A favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/toys-ca\/\">toy<\/a> or a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/treats-chews-ca\/\">treats<\/a> (especially if your dog gets anxious during her visit);<\/li>\n<li>Health care information if you\u2019re switching vets or were seen by a different vet since your last visit;<\/li>\n<li>Stool sample to test for intestinal parasites;<\/li>\n<li>List of questions or concerns to ask the veterinarian, and;<\/li>\n<li>Insurance card (if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/is-pet-insurance-a-good-idea\/\">pet insurance<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Well-Visit Checklist<\/h3>\n<p>An annual health assessment will ensure that your dog\u2019s vaccinations are up to date and give you an opportunity to raise any behavioral or health issues that may be of concern. Don\u2019t be shy about asking questions; seven \u201cdog years\u201d is a long time between appointments so you\u2019ll want to make the most of your vet visit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vaccinations. <\/strong>Keeping your dog\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/general-pet-care\/vaccinations-your-pet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaccinations<\/a> up-to-date is important to her health, and can prevent her from contracting illnesses. Diseases that can affect your pet may be airborne or can be acquired through contact with a parasite, a virus, or fecal matter brought inside on your shoes, so even indoor pets should be vaccinated. Age, health, lifestyle, environment, and geography; all will affect your dog\u2019s vaccination schedule, so be sure to ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your dog.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parasites. <\/strong>Left untreated, flea, tick and worm infestations can put your dog at risk for serious, sometimes deadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/flea-transmitted-diseases\/\">diseases<\/a>. Flea larvae, for example, can live in your house year-round and can transmit a tapeworm infection if your dog swallows even a single flea. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/can-dog-get-lyme-disease\/\">Lyme disease<\/a>, now widespread in some parts of the country, is transmitted primarily by deer ticks and can cause your dog to become sick or lame if left untreated. During your vet visit, your veterinarian can offer suggestions on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/products\/dogs-ca\/flea-tick-control-ca\/\">prevent and\/or control<\/a> parasites and show you how to check for parasites on a regular basis.\n<p><div id=\"attachment_35925\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35925\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35925\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vet-visit-2a.jpg\" alt=\"Vet Visit - Hand brushing dog's tooth for dental care\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Regular dental checkups can keep your dog healthy, and prevent any serious health problems.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dental Care. <\/strong>A dental check should be part of your dog\u2019s well-visit check-up. Proper nutrition, regular brushing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/our-brands\/chewnclean-ca\/\">chew toys\/treats<\/a> designed to rid your dog\u2019s teeth of tartar buildup all contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/dental-essentials-for-dogs\/\">good oral hygiene<\/a> and will help keep her mouth (and body) healthy. Your vet can show you proper brushing techniques and also determine if your dog needs a dental cleaning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behavior. <\/strong>Age, breed, nutrition, environment, and exercise all play a vital role in the development of your dog\u2019s personality and behavior. Talk to your vet if your dog\u2019s behavior is unusual or if she is chewing, biting, barking excessively, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/aggressive-dog-behavior-can-lead-to-biting-learn-how-to-tell-if-a-dog-will-bite-and-how-to-react\/\">showing aggressive tendencies<\/a>. Generally, canine misbehavior can be mitigated or stopped if addressed early.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutrition\/Exercise. <\/strong>It is estimated that nearly one out of every two dogs in the U.S. is either overweight or obese. Those extra pounds can lead to a host of medical problems and impact your dog\u2019s quality and length of life. Well-visits are an opportunity to keep track of her weight and address problems before they affect her health. If necessary, your vet can advise you of an appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartz.com\/en-ca\/exercise-for-weight-loss\/\">diet\/exercise<\/a> regime that will safely help her achieve a healthy weight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Wait Until Your Dog Is Sick<\/h3>\n<p>Make a vet visit a point before your dog becomes ill.
