Choosing a great name for your new cat

When you take a cat into your home, whether it's a tiny playful kitten or fully grown independent adult, there are several things you will need to provide for him or her.

New cat names - Get ideas for choosing a name for your new cat, such as this brown tabby.

Your favorite book or movie may help narrow down the list of names for your new cat.

The first is a litter tray, the next is some delicious cat food, then you'll want a few great cat toys (why not a mouse or two?) and eventually it will come time to invest in a collar and tags. This means you'll have to give your new kitty the one gift he or she won't wear out or need changed regularly - a name.

Picking a New Cat Name

Naming cats can be tough. It's hard to know what kind of personality a kitten will adopt in adulthood, and older cats can be austere and reclusive creatures. So, while part of your naming process should be simply getting to know your pet, there are some ways you can begin to narrow your list. Keep these ideas in mind.

  • Go to your favorite book. While there's no shortage of cats named Boo or Scout, going to a favorite book is a great way to find a few options for new cat names. If nothing appeals to you there, this could be a great excuse to do some movie watching. Mine the stories you love in film, literature and music for fantastic names.
  • Think of the most unlikely name you can come up with. While Dave or Sherry might not be the name you settle on for your cat, by delving into unlikely places, you may uncover a bit of gold. Don't rule out the unusual or un-catlike. Not every kitty is a Cupcake or Shadow - maybe yours is a Melinda!
  • Let someone else decide. Can't make up your mind? Let a friend or family member put in his or her two cents, or hold a vote. If you don't like the suggestions or results, you can veto, after all.
  • Go to another language. Do no words in the English language quite do your new feline friend justice? Don't be afraid to dip into a variety of other languages to find a name for new cat. Sometimes a touch of Castilian or a few musical syllables of Mandarin can capture your pet's personality better than the whole Oxford English dictionary.
